Catch "There's No Business Like Show Business" on November 17 in Spaulding Theatre!
Four local schools, Anacapa, Bishop Diego High, Providence, and Laguna Blanca, have joined forces to bring the best of their respective choral and theater programs for a benefit Broadway review, "There’s No Business Like Show Business."
The multi-school musical cabaret will have one performance only, 6:30PM on Thursday, November 17 at Laguna Blanca’s Spaulding Theater, 4125 Paloma Drive, Santa Barbara.
Students from the schools will share their love of music and theater with the community. There will be collaborative direction and choreography by Austin Escamilla (Providence), Samantha Eve (Anacapa), Miriam Dance (Bishop Diego), and Brianne Hwang (Laguna Blanca), and additional vocal direction from Dauri Kennedy (Santa Barbara School of Performing Arts).
This is the second collaboration between these local independent schools, following their production of "All Together Now!" in the fall of 2021 at Center Stage Theater. Inspired by a shared desire to reconnect after time spent apart due to the pandemic, "All Together Now!" featured songs from Broadway musicals ranging from classic to contemporary.
In the sequel production, audience members can expect to enjoy a new selection of show tunes from well-known Broadway musicals such as "Waitress," "The Wizard of Oz," "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," "Hamilton," and "Thoroughly Modern Millie."
Asked about what the students enjoyed most about working collaboratively, Quinn Williams, an 11th grader at Anacapa School, said, "My favorite part of working with the other schools is getting to work with the other students. It’s really fun to perform with a larger group."
"Also, I like getting to see my friends that go to the other schools, because I don’t see them all that often."
Audience members should look forward to watching the magic that happens when students come together to create something that they’re passionate about, said Emily Whitney, a 12th grade student at Bishop Diego High.
Pointing out the value of theater arts education in local schools, Madison Schock, an 11th grader at Providence School, said: "It helps individuals build a strong sense of self and identity. It provides different perspectives and helps build confidence, friendship, and skills that are necessary for the future."
"We are thrilled to host this multi-school concert at Laguna Blanca's Spaulding Theater and to debut our brand new sound and light system, which will be run by Laguna's phenomenal student tech crew," said Dana Caldwell, Laguna Blanca School's performing arts chair.
