Senior projects have been a meaningful tradition at Laguna for over 30 years and are a distinctive feature of its curricular requirements. The projects culminate with student presentations which reflect the wide range of our students' talents and interests. The presentations this year took place on Monday, June 10 and Tuesday, June 11.
The Senior Project Award represents high honors for a collective body of work and outstanding participation in all senior project requirements. The top award is given to the student who demonstrates exceptional activity that goes significantly beyond the required work.
This year’s senior project award was presented to Kendall Keshen, who embarked on a project that transcended the classroom and delved into the heart of public service. Her ambitious endeavor offered her a front-row seat to the daily realities faced by those who protect and serve our community. Over the course of her project, Kendall spent extensive time with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office (SBSO), University of California Police Department (UCPD), and Santa Barbara Police Department (SBPD), immersing herself in their routines and operations.
Kendall actively participated in ride-alongs that spanned 6 to 12-hour shifts. These experiences provided her with invaluable insights into the myriad challenges and responsibilities that law enforcement officers experience each day. From routine traffic stops to tense domestic disturbance calls, Kendall witnessed firsthand the delicate balance officers maintain between enforcing the law and fostering community trust.
For Kendall, the project was not merely about observing procedures; it was about understanding the human side of policing. Domestic violence calls resonated deeply with her, underscoring the importance of empathy and communication in diffusing volatile situations. As a woman navigating a traditionally male-dominated field, Kendall highlighted the unique perspective and emotional intelligence that women bring to law enforcement, emphasizing their invaluable role in fostering community relationships.
Sergeant Michael Harris, Kendall's supervisor during her off-campus experiences, commended her dedication and sincerity. "Kendall's project was an ambitious one, wherein she was given a front line view of law enforcement, something that very few citizens have ever done. It has been a joy for me to share my love of my chosen profession with Kendall.”
Kendall's senior project transcended academic requirements, and witnessing firsthand the dedication, courage, and compassion of law enforcement officers has left an indelible mark on her. "This experience unlocked a greater sense of responsibility," Kendall noted, "and inspired a commitment to positively impacting society."
Through her project, Kendall Keshen not only gained a profound understanding of law enforcement but also fostered a deeper respect and empathy for those who dedicate their lives to serving and protecting their communities. Her journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of firsthand experience and the importance of bridging the gap between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
Well done, Kendall!
