Adam Bairzin has been involved in science and science education since his own childhood right here in Santa Barbara and Goleta. He graduated from Dos Pueblos High School and then attended UCSB for his bachelor's degree. His formal teaching career started in Oakland and Berkeley after receiving his teaching credential from Cal State East Bay in 2015. Though Adam started by teaching first graders, he later found his passion is inspiring the wonder and awe of middle school students in Science and STEM courses.
Adam loves teaching about all kinds of science, but especially working with students to pursue their own inquiries and experiments. He believes that the act of passing knowledge and skills from one generation to the next is vital to the very nature of our humanity. Adam is proud to be a part of each student’s journey to realize their potential by thinking, questioning, and acting with agency.
When he is not excitedly exploring new scientific revelations with his students, Adam is most likely embracing his inner (and outer) nerd: playing video or board games, experimenting with culinary arts, bird-watching on a hike, reading or watching some new science fiction or fantasy tale, or debating some of the more arcane canon of Lord of the Rings or Star Wars. He also deeply loves spending time with his wife, a medical writer with a Ph.D. in Molecular and Developmental Biology, and their two dogs, Riley and Clover.

Theater Instructor & Performing Arts Department Chair
Dana Caldwell has been a proud Owl since 2014, serving as the Gr. 5-12 Theater Teacher, Director, and Performing Arts Chair at Laguna Blanca School. A Santa Barbara native, she earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and has been actively engaged as an actor, costume designer, director, and educator throughout her career. When she is not in the theater she can be found enjoying the great outdoors with her husband, Charles, and son, Jack (a young Swoop in training!).
On Theater at Laguna: “There is no greater practice of empathy than the work we do in theater as actors and as storytellers. We actively walk in others' shoes, we imagine a world other than our own—lessons we learn within our walls but take with us well beyond the theater. We engage in critical and creative thinking to solve problems as we dive into the unknown. We learn that our own unique gifts are vitally important. We learn that our voice matters and that we can’t do it alone. That it takes a village, showing up for your team, commitment, and follow through. And that humor and friendship get us a long way when the going gets tough. We learn that it’s okay to make mistakes and that perfection is a fool's errand, but sometimes, in that darkly lit theater, in those moments of profound human connection, we get pretty close to it.”

The son of a teacher and a contractor, Zack always knew he would study engineering in college, but two years into a seven-year stint at CSULB he discovered his love for physics. He would end up investing the time necessary to acquire a physics degree in addition to his engineering degree. He began to see the world around him through the lens of his education. Whether it was in his hobbies like archery or juggling or in his work, the things he learned in school made his life so much more interesting. It became clear that he wanted to share his love of learning with other eager individuals and become a teacher. Zack is so grateful to have the opportunity to work and teach at Laguna Blanca, while sharing his knowledge and passion with the next generation.
Zack's curiosity and eagerness to search out the unknown have also generated an incredible sense of adventure. During his vacations, he regularly takes long road trips to nowhere in particular with little to no plan. He also spent four weeks backpacking across Europe after a semester studying abroad in Ireland. For his next big adventure, he plans to hike across the Grand Canyon. Despite this great wanderlust, he is a California boy, born and raised.

Maud Maillard was born in the Champagne region near Paris and raised in many different places in France including Provence, Alsace-Lorraine, and Brittany where different local languages were spoken. She also spent two years on the French Caribbean Island, Guadeloupe where she was exposed to Creole. Growing up with different languages inspired Maud to focus on learning three languages at school.
She studied business administration and foreign languages at the University of Haute-Alsace and received her Master's in International Business in 1991. Maud also took some courses in teaching and education, which led to her first job teaching English and German in a private middle school in Brittany. Even after shifting to the business field, Maud’s real passion was education and she was determined to get back into the classroom. She moved to the U.S. in 1999 and became a French-American citizen.
Maud ran the Laguna Blanca French program for 13 years and was simultaneously a French Lecturer at USCB where she passed her Excellence Review with High Honors in 2017. This same year, Maud, unfortunately, had to move to Boca Raton, Florida due to her husband’s work obligations. There she endorsed some new educational roles teaching English, Leadership, and Study Skills. After four years of Floridian experiences, she is thrilled to be back in beautiful Santa Barbara and the Laguna Blanca community for teaching seventh grade English and sixth grade French. She aspires to keep doing her best at being a creative and inspiring teacher. When asked what Maud enjoys most about working here at Laguna Blanca School, she said, “I consider Laguna Blanca as my second family. My friends and colleagues, and of course the students, are incomparable here. I feel extremely lucky, and I am immensely grateful to be back at Laguna.”
