Born, raised, and educated in England, Grant worked in the Finance Industry in London and New York for 14 years whilst also earning his master’s degree in Business in Singapore before moving to Santa Barbara. In Santa Barbara, he owned and operated his own family restaurant for 7 years. His enthusiasm for Math stems from his unique blend of academic aptitude and real-world experience, and he particularly enjoys using this experience to help math come alive for his students. He believes that proficiency in math is one of the fundamental pillars of education and should be taught in a fun, relevant, and technology-infused environment that stimulates students and promotes success. He spent four years teaching math across various grades in Santa Barbara before making the move to Laguna Blanca to share his passion for the subject.
He is married to Kate, who was one of the founding employees at MOXI before becoming the Director of Development at Women’s Economic Ventures. Together they have three children and they all love camping, traveling, puzzles, and stories of any genre. Grant has coached various sports in town and especially enjoys playing, coaching, and refereeing soccer, as well as hiking, cooking, and spending time in nature.
Maud Maillard was born in the Champagne region near Paris and raised in many different places in France including Provence, Alsace-Lorraine, and Brittany where different local languages were spoken. She also spent two years on the French Caribbean Island, Guadeloupe where she was exposed to Creole. Growing up with different languages inspired Maud to focus on learning three languages at school.
She studied business administration and foreign languages at the University of Haute-Alsace and received her Master's in International Business in 1991. Maud also took some courses in teaching and education, which led to her first job teaching English and German in a private middle school in Brittany. Even after shifting to the business field, Maud’s real passion was education and she was determined to get back into the classroom. She moved to the U.S. in 1999 and became a French-American citizen.
Maud ran the Laguna Blanca French program for 13 years and was simultaneously a French Lecturer at USCB where she passed her Excellence Review with High Honors in 2017. This same year, Maud, unfortunately, had to move to Boca Raton, Florida due to her husband’s work obligations. There she endorsed some new educational roles teaching English, Leadership, and Study Skills. After four years of Floridian experiences, she is thrilled to be back in beautiful Santa Barbara and the Laguna Blanca community for teaching seventh grade English and sixth grade French. She aspires to keep doing her best at being a creative and inspiring teacher. When asked what Maud enjoys most about working here at Laguna Blanca School, she said, “I consider Laguna Blanca as my second family. My friends and colleagues, and of course the students, are incomparable here. I feel extremely lucky, and I am immensely grateful to be back at Laguna.”
